The Primary Series: A Guided Experience

Traditionally, Ashtanga yoga's primary series is taught to the individual student, systematically, posture-by-posture. And led classes are typically counted with minimal instruction. There is great intelligence in learning yoga this way. However, there is also benefit in a learning setting where postures of the practice can also be introduced and more thoroughly explained and experienced, outside the traditional structure.

Students will leave with a greater understanding of our hips and how they function in both movement and stabilization. Plus, movement patterns such as the elusive jump throughs will be broken down and options will be offered for those more challenging postures.

So if you've ever been interested in learning more about the Ashtanga yoga system, particularly the first series - or you are already familiar and would enjoy a bit more instruction - then this is the class for you.

Join Kilkenny for this one-of-a kind magical mindful mystic flow practice where you will journey into the depths of your body unlocking its power through the wisdom of optimal alignment with postures focusing on the sovereign center of your torso a.k.a your "heart" and your "core." When we align and activate optimally these two powerful centers within ourselves in tandem and in equal measure, then we reactivate & reclaim our sovereignty as well as our fluency in our asana practice. This 90 minute intermediate practice (modifications will be offered for folks who want more and for folks who want less) to soulful & upbeat tunes will be initiated with a 5 minute lecture including wisdom nuggets of anatomy; chakras; mantra; mudra; pranayama and will conclude with 5 minute led Mindfulness Meditation & Savasana bathed in soothing classical music.

You will begin with vinyasa and a Kundalini Kriya to prepare the body, navel and lungs for a special rejuvenation technique that purifies the chakras, clears confusion, stuck emotions and any level of stagnation so that you can live in greater vitality and awareness. Expect a short lecture introducing the core concepts, a 20 minute vinyasa warm up, 40 minute physical kriya (special sequence of postures) and the peak 15 minute kriya/meditation to purify the chakras.

This 60 minute vinyasa yoga class is meant for anyone who seeks a safe environment to explore the foundations of Vinyasa Yoga at their own pace, without the intimidation that has come to characterize yoga studio culture. In this class, we'll slowly break down several deceptively difficult postures which are frequently found in Vinyasa-style yoga, such as Downward Facing Dog, Cobra Pose, variations of Chaturanga Dandasana, and Chair Pose. Leave all preconceived notions at the door and and wear your humility on your sleeve- if you can find a smile, breathe, and laugh at yourself, this is the practice for you.

This breath focused vinyasa practice will have you bringing your A-game to the board. Ujjayi breath guided movements will warm your spine and lead to a few fiery salutations to the sun. Rock your core with a powerful plank and core strengthening series adding challenge to your practice before unleashing your own creative fiery flow. Reclaim your breath and awareness in a few longer held postures to build strength and stoke your internal fire. To wind down, you'll find sanctuary in grounded, long held postures where you can breathe more deeply with a calming & balancing breath.

Practice will be sealed with savasana, a guided relaxation, loving kindness and gratitude.

You'll be taxied off the the water and back to shore where you'll be set free to boldly rock the rest of your day.

Dress in layers and bring a towel for a little extra comfort in savasana.

Traditionally, Ashtanga yoga's primary series is taught to the individual student, systematically, posture-by-posture. And led classes are typically counted with minimal instruction. There is great intelligence in learning yoga this way. However, there is also benefit in a learning setting where postures of the practice can also be introduced and more thoroughly explained and experienced, outside the traditional structure.

Students will leave with a greater understanding of our hips and how they function in both movement and stabilization. Plus, movement patterns such as the elusive jump throughs will be broken down and options will be offered for those more challenging postures.

So if you've ever been interested in learning more about the Ashtanga yoga system, particularly the first series - or you are already familiar and would enjoy a bit more instruction - then this is the class for you.

Expect a full body yoga practice, including:

Infused with poetry from her self published, “Collecting Feathers,” Tara (Becky) will take you on a journey hOMe. While drinking in the sacred sounds of heartbeat and breath, we will take the ability to listen and to feel even deeper within. We will tap into that intuitive sense of knowing; how and when to move and when to be still. Allow yourself to reconnect to that sacred animal within and the poetry that is your practice, ultimately reminding us how to simply be free both on and off of the yoga mat as we continue to author the most epic novel of all; our life.
About the book:
I was searching for something.I was searching and in the midst of doing so they began to present themselves to me....one by one.  I had come to the realization that my Dharma and my purpose was so much bigger then my physical self and location. Fear had held me back for quite some time but it is only so long a bird can be held in cage.In this realization that flight was required in order to share the message that my teachers had given to me and all of their teachers had given to them, I was able to see and decided to trust in something so much bigger than myself.Upon my searching they continued to present themselves to me as they still do... Sometimes in the form of a bouquet after a long walk through the woods. My path was being laid before me and I followed.Paying very close attention to where they appeared, who I was with and the intention behind why I was where, it begin to make sense. I return to the places where they find me the most with a continued reminder of the importance of non-attachment. Feathers are not meant to be held down. I know I will return when the time is right.My searching and continues but I no longer feel lost. They are there to remind me that I am not alone. They are there to remind me of this path and this Dharma. They are there to remind me of the importance of my flight and each and every place they guide me to land.They are there to remind me of these wings that existed all along.I was searching for something, but now they find me. As I collect these feathers... As I spread These Wings... I am home.
